Ignatius of Loyola was a Spanish theologian and founder of the Society of Jesus, also known as the Jesuits. Created in 1534, the Jesuit order soon became a driving force in the movement to combat the growing power of the Protestant Reformation. In 1622, Ignatius was canonized and received the title of Saint. Order members are known for their discipline, missionary work, and commitment to education.
