Gaia Theory
The Gaia Theory is a controversial hypothesis proposed by research scientist James Lovelock. His theory proposes that the biosphere and all of the physical parts of the earth form a system that keeps the climate, life forms, earth matter and chemicals in a balanced state equilibrium.
The Gaia Theory believes that with the presence of a mixture of chemicals like oxygen and methane gas are at a constant on earth and this may determine life on a planet. This planet self sustaining system has been titled the Gaia Theory named after the Greek goddess Gaia. The temperature of the earth is another part of the theory that states that the temperature stays constant even though the sun’s temperature increases, and the gases present on the earth should cause changes in the atmosphere, but the gas content stays at a constant level, and this is all due to the life forms and the biosphere.
Another part of the theory suggest that the salinity of the oceans should be higher due to the salty rivers and lakes but it is not so. Lovelock believes that organic matter is the cause of this equilibrium. The lifecycle of the organisms is the reason that there is constant equilibrium in the earth’s soils, oceans ad atmosphere. While and organism is alive it emits certain gases like CO2, then when it dies it emits another gas into the soil or the oceans, and this keeps the atmosphere at a constant state.
The basic overview of the theory is that the live organisms in the earth emit certain gases that maintain the earth’s temperature, atmosphere and oceans through a cycle of creation and death. This symbiotic approach is similar to a host and its organs that function and produce life sustaining elements to ensure the survival of the host and maintain its equilibrium.
This theory has been criticized and praised at the same time. There are current scientist that have to admit that there is some scientific truth to Lovelock’s theory and that the presence of CO2 and methane gas levels shows that there is not a significant change in the temperature of the earths surface and that the salt content of the ocean has not changed significantly in ages is testament that there is a reason for this stability and it can be attributed to organisms in the earth.
The concept of the theory has been compared to the cycle of life and its theories. A life form is created from a single celled organism and it grows and contributes to the atmosphere through its life process and as it dies it continues to contribute to the earth or the sea through its remains by emitting gases that create a homeostasis in the atmosphere. There is a constant exchange of gases and by products that allow the cycle of life to continue.
The earth and its biosphere and other components is in theory a self sustaining entity that is created by the living organisms within it that keep a constant equilibrium through everyday functioning and sharing and exchanging elements of their own creation.

Better it would have been if the Gaia Theory of James Lovelock could have been endorsed by all. The said theory aims at pointing that the factors behind the equilibrium on the earth are organisms: living organisms emit gases like CO2 and Methane and dead ones emit some other gas which go into the soil and oceans and thus keep the atmospheric equilibrium. Probably this is not the whole story. It is a fact that the earth receives foreign particles which intrude into the earth from the space beyond the atmosphere of the earth. Secondly, global warming has been here to warn us all. Lovelock’s theory of constant equilibrium accepting entities as self-sustaining ones has many more questions to answer.
There is a truth in what Gaia theory states. Most of the proved logic in the way our earth works agrees with Gaia theory. James Livelock deserves praise for this theory which explains the harmonic balance between the living organisms and the gases present in the atmosphere which makes the life a suitable one on Earth.By viewing our neighboring planets in solar system the gas escape velocity significantly reduce the probability of live contrary to how our earth works.
This theory is very complicated thus some of it speaks the truth and I don’t know how to debate on it. It’s like having opposite energy to balance it. There is a positive energy and a negative energy, If you have to have life, there should be death. It’s like yin yang. Harmony to have balance.
De-forestation should affect the Gaia theory by a long way. This is because greenery constitutes the better part of this earth and any harm done to trees will result in the imbalance of life forms on the planet. Several countries in the Europe are known for their wonderful landscapes and greenery.
Almost all of the great scientific theories are often thought as being too complicated or too controversial and thus are slow in being understood, much less accepted, by other scientists, theologians (especially theologians) and the general public. Good Lord, there are still people out there who think Charles Darwin was a nutcake! Would be really interesting to see, if 100 years from now, Lovelock’s theories are accepted or still being widely debated.
Gaia theory proposed by scientist James Lovelock is easily explainable but complex to prove every point of it. From the abstract the theory looks fascinating and promising. It may helps us to explore a new concept in science.Comparing the far away galaxies in our universe with our solar system then there must be some life forms in other galaxies similar to humans where a sustainable equilibrium between living organisms and the physical components might have been flourishing.
Gaia theory is good. It explains clearly the concept which helps the life organism in earth to sustain themselves by having an unbreakable with the components that make this earth. The concept of balancing the earth through an equilibrium is pretty old but new concepts are coming out every year.Gaia theory makes more sense than other theories which define the living organisms in earth on a scientific framework. However Gaia theory still needs to be extensively discussed and proved to be more effective to the common mass.
The current changes in industrialization and the global warming would certainly affect the balance as predicted by Gaia theory. The question is can the earth heal herself after significant damages. Gaia need to be expanded and improved to answer all questions that could arise regarding the balance in the earth which would make the theory one of the most followed ones in the scientific world.
With this theory, with my understanding is that if we abuse our planet their is an effect that will greatly hurt our planet? If it is then I agree. Abuse or misuse of our resources should be lessen and we should know how to conserve our planet. We only have one you know.
In my opinion, Earth isn’t an organism but a solid form of rock that sets a good conditions for life to grow and I know earth adapts to it’s living settings to survive. That how I understand it that’s why I’m a little skeptic about this theory.
The theory says that the existence of life on earth keeps on changing like the temperature, atmoshpere, etc. so that our life span can still continue. Our survival acts as a contradictory reaction system to prevent conditions too hostile towards it.
It states that earth is an entity modifying itself constantly by living organisms to have an equilibrium that promotes the existence of living things including us. Though sometimes I think that Gaia is one form of new climatology itself. Just my two cents.
There are still a lot to prove with this theory, besides it’s still a theory that a lot of people still debating upon. Others says that it is another form of religion, other says that it’s another climatology. Who know what’s in store for it in the future.
During my school days, the local science center exhibited a sealed glass sphere. This sphere contained miniature plants and organisms such as shrimps. It was placed there for a year to show that living things in the sphere can survive in the given time without food supply and waste removal from external sources. This little experiment somewhat proved that the Gaia Theory is true to a certain extent. But for prolonged period of time, extensive human destruction of the environment may result in imbalance on our planet.
I find that little experiment interesting and someway the Gaia theory went into that. Either this theory is true are not when it comes to our planet we all have our own contribution for our the survival of our species.
With our problems with our planet especially the climate change I will believe that the Gaia Theory is a fact because we can see it around us. With our species abusing our planet we can now see the consequence that we are experiencing now.
This is a very good theory. There are quite a lot of theories which insists on harmonious balance with the substances on this earth. However Gaia theory specifically defines the effect of balance on this earth and its perpetual in maintaining life on earth. With the global warming and increase in carbon levels in the atmosphere the balance maintained on this earth would come under increasing stress and it would be quite interesting how Gaia theory addresses this problem.
In my own idea the Gaia Theory is like the cause and effect, Whatever we do, there is an effect that will balance what we have done. The climate change that we are experiencing now is the effect of the people has done to earth and now our planet is looking for ways on how to balance it.
Earth as a single organism? Somehow I heard it but I couldn’t remember who said it. Let’s try it to expound a little further then, how about in our universe? is it also part of one living cell? There are a lot of questions still unanswered here. How do this theory explain our universe then.
I would acknowledge that living things on Earth are collaborating with the Earths atmosphere and environment to conserve a consistent state or equilibrium sounds credible and is interesting. I think it is a bit much, though, to call the Earth itself or the stars or the Universe a living thing. Its a little too over stated for me.
With this theory, have any one consider that we are not part of this so called organisms and we are the cancer that destroy this organisms? In what I’m experiencing now I think that we are because we abuse and use what our mother nature has given us and only a few try to replenish this resources.
In my opinion the author’s decided that Earth itself be thought of as a “living” organism. It seems to me that the assumption is saying that, once life began, it then combines with both from with in and the planet in whatever way was necessary to ensure its existence. You have to take note that it does not mean the prolonging of humans but life period.
This Gaia Theory is something which has to be seen with lots of keenness to understand and get a clarity about Lovelock’s findings. James Lovelock relates it very beautifully to the orgin of the organism and also the very truth of earth having elements within it which is helping in making its living organism sustain. However also being contrevertial naming it afer a goddess.
Global warming’s greenhouse effect may upset Gaia’s Theory. But there is global dimming coming into the picture. Global dimming is a gradual reduction of the amount of global irradiance at our planet’s surface. Global dimming is believed to be a result of an increase in particles such as sulfate aerosols due to our activities. It seems to be able to contra some effects of global warming.
Gaia theory would be watched with interests by many evolution experts. The theory’s prediction has been solid and to a certain can be largely believed by the people. Extinction of dinosaurs and other pre ancient species on Earth would still need a lot of explanations to prove them according to Gaia theory. However overall the theory has been a good one.
The prediction of ice age and the evolution of humans have a lot to do with the atmospheric concentration of gases. Global warming and asteroid crashes often disturb this harmonic balance leading to destruction of life form. Gaia theory is quite good and many of the findings to prove the theory would be watched with great interests in the coming future.
The Evolution of earth had always remained as a mystery so far. Many people had proposed many theories most of them have one valid point in them. Gaia theory’s prediction have been relatively accepted by the scientific community. Many of its predictions can be practically tested especially the life cycles and the gas concentrations in the atmosphere.
Lovelock has defined the beauty of how the Nature, living things and the chemical substances balance each other and makes the existence of Earth favorable to each other in his Gaia Theory. There are some basic fact and truth’s in this theory that no scientists can object. His connect to the temperature and the dead or living beings omission of gas is beautiful. He has seen life in everything and has projected the same in every description in this theory.
The researcher James lovelock has seen the world on whole as a organic matter. And his view in aspect of earth surviving these long years with the living beings is very marvelous. The equal balance given and taken by every living and dead beings are so neatly explained which has made us think beyond. It is at last says in simple way that everything is within and outside us to survive.
This Theory has explained the formation of life through a single cell which then evolves as a being and contributes to the earth in many ways through living and while dead. This has been a thought of refresh which has helped many to analyze the worth of a being. James Lovelock as in nutshell explained the life cycle and formation of the Earth.
Gaia theory has not left any aspect in this Earth untold or unrevealed. James Lovelock has spoken about the origin of Earth and its each substances like atmosphere, soil, sea, ocean , living organisms etc., His description about the organic substances reaching the soil and the oceans is really nice. This theory has helped me to know about many things that evolved in Earth by itself.
This is the first time I heard of this Gaia theory about in some ways explain some of what is happening around the world. As an organism, all of us depends on what others emits or gives. They make a certain balance that makes the world complete in some ways.
Is the Gaia Theory saying that what we do with our planet will do good or harm? It’s like the cause and effect. What we do as what we get. With this theory can they actually predict what will happen with us in the future? Is the climate change a part of this theory? I’m still a lost with it and I would try to look for more information regarding this theory.
Can this theory explain the evolution? Does it mean that from a single cell we came to evolve as a human being. There are still a lot of questions needed to be answered and the author of this theory still has a lot of answering. This theory is still in it’s young stage and still a lot to discover.
I read one comment that this theory can predict the climate change like the ice age because of this atmospheric pressure and gases. This sounds very interesting and I’m hoping to read more about this theory. I remember Al Gore, former vice president of the United States who is one of the fore runners of climate change. I was also interested in his book. Maybe they can collaborate on this in the future.
Climate change is a serious matter and in my opinion is already starting and we need to make actions regarding this. I hope people start to care for our planet and begin to decrease the abuse that we are doing to our planet. We can start it from with in ourselves.
I just researched this theory and this started way back 1970′s and I guess they formed a lot of hypothesis regarding it. So I don’t agree with one of the posters that it is still on its beginning stage. Though in my mind that there are still a lot of questions needed to be answered regarding this theory.
